The Victorian public was obsessed with aquariums, and the fascinated by marine zoology. Many books about the shoreline and its inhabitants published between 1850 and 1880 were very popular. The most famous Victorian mermaid story is Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" first published in 1837 and became part of the popular culture. It is about a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul.
